  • Welcome to Allergy Season!  Even in Alaska, spring has sprung and for many of us, that means the beginning of allergy season. Every year, symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis kick up in the spring and can last all the way through to early fall. Usually caused by allergic sensitivity to pollen from trees, grasses or weeds, millions of Americans are sneezing our way through the season.

And every year we seem to hear that this year will be the worst.

Whether or not this allergy season will be the worst yet, the number of Americans who suffer from allergies are increasing.

    Who Suffers from Allergies?

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year

    • More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year, and the related respiratory condition asthma affects more than 17 million adults and more than 7 million children.
    • One in five people in the U.S. have either allergy or asthma symptoms.
    • Allergic disease, including asthma, is the fifth leading chronic disease in the U.S. in people of all ages. It is the third most common chronic disease in children under 18 years old.
    • In data published from the 2014 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 8.4 percent of US children under age 18 suffered from hay fever, 10{9fbccc156f5725be75a91a7362b6154d0906bc3e0dc58094d3ca1c8a1bab6a64} from respiratory allergies, 5.4{9fbccc156f5725be75a91a7362b6154d0906bc3e0dc58094d3ca1c8a1bab6a64} from food allergies, and 11.6{9fbccc156f5725be75a91a7362b6154d0906bc3e0dc58094d3ca1c8a1bab6a64} from skin allergies.

Luckily Juneau is not an “allergy capital” according to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America rankings which placed Jackson, Mississippi at the top, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting our fair share of itchy eyes, runny noses, sneezing and scratchy throats.

Sadly, there is no cure for allergies.  The best we can do is manage and treat our symptoms.

Many of us take allergy medication to combat our symptoms and use other little tricks (like showering off the pollen in our hair or changing our clothes after we’ve been outside), but we at Northern Refrigeration have another method that might help you and the allergy sufferers in your family breathe easier this allergy season.

    How Can We Help?

Many ductless heat pumps come standard with anti-allergen filters that purify the air.

Many of our ductless heat pumps come standard not only with dust filters, but also with anti-allergen and deodorizing filters that purify the air as it passes into your home.  Once installed, the anti-allergen enzyme filter will begin capturing all airborne bacteria, viruses, germs, dust and pollen.  The enzyme inside the filter then breaks the bonds in the allergen proteins, eliminating harmful allergens from the air you breathe inside.  A deodorizing filter can also help filter out food and pet odors that might linger.

So not only will you be warm and comfortable all year round, you’ll also be breathing easier in your own home.
